Jazz Guitar Shell Voicings: Root, Third & Seventh

Muted strings are part of a clean voicing. A shell intentionally omits the fifth.

Shell voicings: root, third and seventh · By Vincent Iannone · Updated

What is a shell voicing on guitar?

A shell voicing is a three-note chord that plays only the root, third and seventh (or sixth). The fifth is left out because it says little about the chord’s quality, and leaving it out keeps the grip small and leaves room for a melody or soloist. Most shells use two string sets. With the root on string 5, the order is root, third, seventh: Dm7 is x-5-3-5-x-x (D3, F3, C4). With the root on string 6, the seventh sits below the third: G7 is 3-x-3-4-x-x (G2, F3, B3). Every string not in the shape is muted on purpose. Because shells are movable, a handful of grips covers major sevenths, minor sevenths and dominant sevenths in every key.

The idea

A shell uses the root, third, and seventh. The fifth can be omitted because it usually adds less information about chord quality. Three notes are enough to outline the harmony and leave space for a melody.

Put it under your fingers

  1. Play Dm7 as x-5-3-5-x-x from string 6 to string 1: D3 F3 C4.
  2. Mute unused strings. Pick the three sounding strings individually, then together.
  3. Hear the Dm7 shell in the play-along and match them without squeezing the neck.

Three notes make a Dm7 shell

D3-F3-C4 is the root, minor third, and minor seventh of Dm7. Hear them separately, then play x-5-3-5-x-x together.

Sounding notes: D3 → F3 → C4.

Three notes make a Dm7 shell: the sounding notes in orderD3, up 3 semitones to F3, up 7 semitones to C4.C3C41D32F33C4
Higher dots sound higher. Lines join the notes in the order they are played; numbers match the table.

Make it yours

Strum the Dm7 shell softly four times. Make the muted strings stay silent.
